Djokovic, Federer and Nadal have made up the top two in the year-end ATP Rankings in 14 of the past 16 seasons. Federer, who did not compete after reaching this year's Australian Open semi-finals due to injury, will end the year at the number five spot. Nadal now leads the 'Big Three' --featuring him, Djokovic and Roger Federer - with 12 top two finishes.
By clinching the men`s world number one tennis ranking for the sixth time, Djokovic has equaled childood hero Pete Sampras' record. During the year, Djokovic won the ATP Cup in January before picking up a record-extending eight Australian Open Grand Slam in Melbourne. 33-year-old Djokovic, the winner of 17 Grand Slam titles, has mentioned that Roger Federer`s record of 310 weeks as No. 1 remains his target.
On Saturday,Djokovic fended off Milos Raonic 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Western and Southern Open to extend his 2020 winning run to 23-0. It was Djokoivic's 80th title of his career and with that, he also equalled Rafael Nadal`s record of 35 Masters 1000 wins. Djokovic is leading the ATP standings with 10,860 points and maintaing a lead of 510 points over Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal.
