In an opening ceremony marked by simplicity, one tradition held on Friday (July 23) as athletes paraded into the Olympic stadium by national groups, waving but with smiles hidden behind masks, and most having both male and female flagbearers for the first time. The Tokyo Games like no other opened with fireworks illuminating an almost empty National Stadium and a moment of silence to honour those lost to COVID-19, with a nod to Japanese tradition represented by wooden Olympic rings linked to the 1964 Games. India were represented by flagbearers Manpreet Singh (hockey captain) and boxer MC Mary Kom as we can see in these collection of pictures.

Manika Batra and Achanta Sharath Kamal have qualified for the mixed doubles event of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The Indian pair stun Korean pair Lee Sangsu and Jeon Jihee 4-2 in the final clash at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers. Earlier, all the four Indian paddlers Sharath, Manika, Gnanasekaran Sathiyan, and Sutirtha Mukherjee earned themselves singles qualification at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Tokyo Olympics: Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra among 4 Indians to qualify

Looking to secure double qualification, Sharath also cruised into the semi-finals in the mixed doubles with Manika Batra after the pair defeated Mohammed Abdulwahhab and Maha Faramarzi of Qatar 11-6, 11-6, 11-2, 11-3 in the quarters. While G Sathiyan topped the South Asia group with two wins in as many matches, Sharath Kamal ended as the top-ranked second-placed player, handing him the sixth slot for Tokyo 2020. This will be a maiden Olympics for G Sathiyan, it will be a fourth one for veteran Sharath Kamal.
