New Delhi: While scientists are busy delving deep into the science behind the limits of life expectancy, a family has set a new Guinness World Record for their longevity.

With a combined age of 1,073 years, the Donnelly family were 16 children, out of which 13 are still alive. The youngest is 72-years-old and the oldest is 93.

Their secret, according to the youngest sibling, Joe Donnelly, lies in their father's habit of grabbing a bite before bed every night. “Porridge at around 10pm, then again for breakfast at 7:00 am. Cooked oats, milk, a spot of apple jam on top,' he told the Daily Mail.

Studies have shown that porridge is good for lowering blood pressure, diabetes and even curbing the risk of heart disease.

As per the Daily Mail, the family grew up on a farm in County Armagh, Northern Ireland and lived on foods that were fresh and home-grown and apples were a family favourite.

The report also revealed that people living near certain kinds of apple orchards in England have lived longer lives. Scientists believe a compound in the fruit called epicatechin polyphenon, reduces "arterial age by up to a decade".
