New Delhi: For students, there is none as stressful as going into an exam – be it competitive or board exams. And with students often being faced with a series of tests and exams, particularly, at the end of their academic session, their stress levels run out of control.

Studies have revealed exam stress as one among causes of teen suicide.

 

With CBSE Class XII and Class X board exams beginning Thursday, March 9, here are a few tips for parents to help their children tackle stress during exams:

  • Help your child set realistic goals rather than unrealistic expectations that can put unnecessary pressure on him/her. While doing so, it's important to know your child's strengths, interests and weaknesses.
  • Teach him/her to develop strategies that can help deal with stress.
  • Provide him a quiet place to study without distractions.
  • Ensure that he asks for help whenever necessary, including his studies.
  • Keep a track on what he's studying and how he makes use of his time.
  • Ask him to take breaks in between his studies.
  • Make learning an exciting activity depending on the age of your child.
  • Look out for signs and symptoms of exam stress - low mood, sleep disturbances, frustration, anger, feeling cranky, teeth grinding, etc.
  • Encourage your child to develop healthy eating and sleeping habits – help him stick to a regular eating, bedtime.
  • Motivate him to make time for exercise and recreation.
  • Provide him with nutrient-rich foods focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and proteins, which are all good for the brain and overall health as well.

Remember, your child is not alone in this struggle. The fact is that every child goes through such situations and learns to cope up with stress arising out of them. What's most crucial is that your constant support and encouragement, even if he flunks his exam.
