His resignation will now trigger a fierce leadership battle within the Conservative Party. The 1922 Committee is responsible for setting the timetable for a Tory leadership contest. To take part in the race, a Tory MP has to be nominated by eight colleagues. If more than two MPs put themselves forward and secure enough nominations to run for leader, a series of secret ballots are held to whittle them down.

"He has been responsible for lies, scandal and fraud on an industrial scale. And all those who have been complicit should be utterly ashamed. The Tory Party have inflicted chaos upon the country during the worst cost of living crisis in decades and they cannot now pretend they are the ones to sort it out. UK minister for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, resigned from his position on Thursday (local time), saying that he no longer believed the values of honesty, integrity and mutual respect are being upheld by Prime Minister Boris Johnson`s government. In his resignation letter to Boris Johnson, Lewis wrote, "A decent and responsible Government relies on honesty, integrity and mutual respect - it is a matter of profound personal regret for me that I must leave Government as I no longer believe those values are being upheld." The Minister has served under the government for over a decade.
