Australia's Victoria reports five COVID-19 cases amid lockdown
Australia's Victoria state reported five new local COVID-19 cases on Saturday amid a strict lockdown. The infections bring the latest cluster to 35, but the number of exposure sites visited by the infected people has expanded to more than 150. Victoria went into the weeklong lockdown on Thursday night, the state`s fourth in the pandemic, forcing residents to remain at home.

Australia`s coronavirus hot spot state of Victoria on Sunday extended a hard lockdown by two weeks to the end of September as infection rates have declined more slowly than hoped. State Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday extended the hard lockdown, in place since August 2, to September 28 with a slight relaxation. Melbourne`s stage 4 restrictions, which had been due to end on Sept. 13, shut most of the economy, limited people`s movements to a 5-km (3-mile) zone around their homes for one hour a day and imposed a night time curfew.

Australia`s Victoria declared a state of disaster on Sunday and imposed a nightly curfew for the capital Melbourne as part of its harshest movement restrictions to date to contain a resurgent COVID-19. Melbourne, Australia`s second-largest city, has struggled to rein in the disease, with record numbers of infections of the new coronavirus reported last week. On Sunday, Victoria reported 671 infections, one of its highest, and seven COVID-19 deaths.
