Tesla`s vehicles originally used sensors built into the steering wheel to keep drivers` hands on the wheel while on Autopilot. The new feature also comes only a few days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the company`s Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, in North America, were being made without radar. But the transition from radar sensors to a camera-based system is not a good look as far as safety goes.

Two videos of a man driving with his hands off the wheel were posted on the alleged Tiktok account of the victim, 35-year-old Steven Hendrickson of Running Springs in California. Tesla dubbed its driver assistant features "Autopilot" or "Full Self-driving," which experts say could mislead consumers into believing the car can drive by itself. Since 2016 at least three Tesla vehicles operating on Autopilot have been in fatal crashes, two involving a Tesla car driving beneath a semi-truck in Florida.

Now Tesla cars can drive without anyone in driver's seat

The engineers tested a Tesla Model Y this week as investigators probe an accident where two men died after their Tesla Model S, which was believed to be operating without anyone in the driver`s seat, crashed into a tree on Saturday night north of Houston. Over several trips across half-mile closed test track, the Model Y automatically steered along painted lane lines, the magazine said. NHTSA said Monday it was sending a special crash investigation team to probe the crash and has opened 28 crashes into Tesla crashes to date, with four pending.
