However, none of the top social media companies except Koo have reportedly adhered to the new rules. The government sources said that these social media companies are coming up with several excuses like seeking more time, up to six months, for furnishing compliance whereas others have claimed that they are waiting for instruction from US headquarters.

Govt lays down guidelines for social media channels, OTT under new IT rules
Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar announced the new Digital Media Ethics Code. This new document mentions section 87 of the IT Act, 2000 which offers the government powers to make such rules.

When quizzed about censorship on content available on OTT platforms, Javadekar added that "we are trusting self-regulation' on OTT. The government also announced new guidelines to curb the misuse of social media platforms.
