Petra Kvitova News
Top men and women seeds Rafa Nadal and Iga Swiatek eased into the second round of the Wimbledon 2022 on Day 2 of the Grand Slam on Tuesday (June 28). There were, however, major upsets as seven-time champ Serena Williams and sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime crashed out. Here are TOP highlights from Day 2 of Wimbledon 2022.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had to battle hard to reach the third round of the 2021 Australian Open. The double defending-champion posted a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 6-3 over American Francis Tiafoe. There was, however, disappointment for the likes of Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams, who crashed out of the year's first Grand Slam. Here we take a look at some of the major matches from Day 3 of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Seventh-seed Petra Kvitova`s superior firepower proved decisive as she posted her fourth successive straight-sets victory with win over Zhang Shuai. Meanwhile, Zhang was playing in the fourth round of a Slam for only the third time in 33 attempts having also not dropped a set so far Kvitova will sense a golden title opportunity as she heads into a quarter-final against either Germany`s Laura Siegemund or Spain`s Paula Badosa, neither of whom are seeded.
Petra Kvitova stormed into the last-16 of the ongoing French Open with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over her Canadian opponent Leylah Fernandez. No wonder the 30-year-old Kvitova looked so relieved when she cracked a winner to end Fernandez`s resistance after a near two-hour battle between the two left-handers. The twice Wimbledon champion has reached the fourth round in Paris for the fifth time and will be starting to fancy her chances with China`s unseeded Zhang Shuai up next.
Serena Williams slumped to a 6-1, 3-6, 3-6 defeat at the hands of Victoria Azarenka in the semi-final of the US Open to crash out of the tournament. With the withdrawal, the American has now joined two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu. Earlier, top-ranked Australian player Ashleigh Barty had also revealed that she would miss the upcoming tournament in Rome.
