Any journalist now residing in Afghanistan must rely on the Taliban for security. Many of the stories the world reads about Taliban-controlled Afghanistan are fabricated, said Massoud Hossaini, Pulitzer Award winner and Human Rights campaigner. Massoud criticised the present administration, noting that the economic situation in Afghanistan is at an all-time low.
Religious freedom conditions in Pakistan continued to worsen. There was a sharp rise in targeted killings, blasphemy cases, forced conversions, and hate speech targeting religious minorities. In 2020, there reportedly were 30 Christians, including seven on death row, jailed in Pakistan on charges of blasphemy, said the report.
Bureaucratic corruption, a dearth of accountability and investigation in cases of violence against women, led to the marginalization of women in Pakistan. Threats, harassment, abductions, violence, and killings led journalists and editors to practice self-censorship. Pashtun, Sindhi, and Baloch human rights activists arrested or disappeared. Mob violence against religious minorities, including Christians, Ahmadi Muslims, and Hindus.
The resolution was brought after OHCHR earlier in January released a damning report on gross rights violations in Sri Lanka The resolution was adopted by the council as 22 countries out of 47 voted in its favour China and Pakistan voted against the resolution meanwhile India abstained from voting it
