Gareth Bale News
Son’s right-foot curler in off the post completed a satisfying day for 29-year-old rookie manager Mason. It looks likely Bale will return to Madrid at the end of the season, although after Sunday’s display Spurs fans will be hoping he can extend his stay. Eight of Bale’s 14 Premier League appearances under Mourinho were as a substitute but he has started both of Mason’s games in charge, albeit surprisingly only on the bench in last week’s League Cup final defeat by Manchester City.
Bale is set to skipper Wales at the European Championship in June. Getting away on international duty with Wales, said Bale, came at just the right time. Wales begin their bid to qualify for a first World Cup since 1958 at top-ranked Belgium on Wednesday and then play Mexico in a friendly in Cardiff on Saturday.
Bale has been struggling in his second spell at Tottenham, making just seven Premier League appearances. Ajax left it late to beat Lille 2-1 in France, where United States forward Timothy Weah opened the scoring for Lille in the 72nd. Two goals in two minutes from Brazilian forward Kenedy and Venezuelan midfielder Yangel Herrera gave Spanish side Granada a surprising 2-0 win over Napoli.
Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said he did not say anything to Gareth Bale before he left to sign for Tottenham Hotspur but insisted he had no personal issue with the Wales forward. Bale travelled to London on Friday to finalise a return to Tottenham on loan after seven years at Real which witnessed a remarkable haul of trophies. While Bale was key to Real winning the 2016 Champions League in Zidane`s first season, he was absent from most of the second campaign due to injuries and never managed to re-establish himself as a first-choice player for the Frenchman.
Bale has so far scored over 100 goals for the Spanish side since his record-breaking move in 2013. The Welshman has a contract until 2022 and was set to make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League in 2019 before the transfer was scuttled when Real made a last-minute decision to insist on a transfer fee rather than terminate his contract.
