None of ByteDance India`s employees have been paid their March salaries due to the account freeze, said two people familiar with the matter. The company told the court it has a workforce of 1,335, including outsourced personnel. The court declined to grant ByteDance immediate relief in a brief hearing on Wednesday. The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. The investigation centres on potential evasion of taxes related to online advertising and other financial dealings between ByteDance India and its parent entity in Singapore, TikTok Pte Ltd.
InMobi, Glance’s parent company owns short-video app Roposo that became really popular after TikTok was banned by the Indian government. TikTok, a global phenomenon, reached over 120 million Indian users before it was banned in July 2020 among several others, including the hot favourite mobile game PUBG.
According to a source at Bytedance, the company held a town hall on Wednesday where it communicated about the closure of India business. When contacted Tiktok spokesperson said the company has worked steadfastly to comply with the government of India order issued on June 29, 2020 and continually strives to make its apps comply with local laws and regulations.
China will need to approve ByteDance`s proposed deal with Oracle Corp for its TikTok app, the Chinese company said on Thursday. Oracle has submitted a proposal to the Trump administration that will allow it to become a technology partner in the TikTok app. The proposal envisages making TikTok Global a US-headquartered company.
