Security forces in Belarus crack down on protesters, detain dozens
Footage published by local news outlets showed police officers wearing black balaclavas dragging protesters into unmarked black vans and beating protesters with their batons at a rally that drew thousands onto the streets of Minsk, the capital. One sequence showed a police van unleashing a powerful jet of water from a cannon into crowds, visibly pushing them back. Belarus, a former Soviet republic closely allied with Russia, has been rocked by street protests and strikes since authorities announced that veteran leader Alexander Lukashenko had won an August 9 vote by a landslide.

Protesters flood into Belarus' capital Minsk as army issues warning
The streets of Minsk turned red and white as a flood of demonstrators carried flags symbolising their opposition to Lukashenko and chanted for him to leave power and for new elections to be held. The ministry said that memorials, specifically ones to those killed in World War Two, were holy sites that must not be desecrated. The interior ministry issued its own statement warning that any unsanctioned protests would be considered illegal.

Protests swell in Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko blames foreigners
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Friday told people to stay at home to avoid becoming "cannon fodder" for what he said were foreign-backed revolutionaries. Huge crowds took to the streets for a sixth consecutive day to demand he step down. Lukashenko, whose claimed landslide re-election victory last Sunday has been branded a fraud by protesters, has failed to quell days of street demonstrations against him.

Belarus holds election as street protests rattle President Lukashenko
Belarus began voting in an election on Sunday pitting President Alexander Lukashenko against a former teacher who emerged from obscurity to lead the biggest challenge in years against Lukashenko. Lukashenko is almost certain to win a sixth consecutive term but could face a new wave of protests amid anger over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy and his human rights record. A former Soviet collective farm manager, Lukashenko has ruled since 1994.

Hundreds protest in Belarus after 2 main challengers barred from poll ballot
Hundreds of people protested in the Belarusian capital on Tuesday after the central election commission refused to register the two main rivals of President Alexander Lukashenko as candidates in the August 9 presidential election. Viktor Babariko, a banker who was detained last month, was excluded from the ballot because of a criminal case against him, the commission said. Valery Tsepkalo, a former ambassador who runs an office park for tech companies, was also rejected after signatures on a supporting petition were nullified.
