New York: Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Juan Martin del Potrol to advance into men's singles semi-final at the US Open 2016.
Stan, who is a two-time Grand Slam winner, won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a match that lasted for over three hours.
The Swiss, who beats Illya Marchenko 6-4, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to set up quarter-final clash with the towering Argentine, played the pressure points brilliantly well.
In the fourth set, Wawrinka broke del Potro's serve early and then broke it again in the third game with a stunning backhand winner.
Del Potro, the 2009 US Open winner, had missed nine successive slams due to a string of wrist surgeries before returning to Wimbledon, where he ousted Wawrinka in the second round.
Del Potro carried his good form into Rio Olympics where he stunned Novak Djokovic in the first round and went on to claim silver.
Wawrinka will now lock horns with Kei Nishikori, who stunned Andy Murray to advance into semis.
Nishikori, who became the first Asian man to reach a grand slam final when he finished runner-up here in 2014, defeated the World No. 2 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5.
In another semi-final Djokovic is up against Frenchman Gael Monfils.
