The American defeated German Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon ladies' final to win her 22nd Grand Slam singles title, equalling Steffi Graf's Open Era record.

And what did she do before such a momentous final?

Read a poem. A poem by fellow African-American Maya Angelou, with every word in the poem reflecting the Serena's self.

Then, "I rise, I rise, I rise," said Serena.
