Moscow: A brace from Cavani proved to be the difference between the two sides as Uruguay knockout the Portugal 2-1 in their round of 16 match. Diego Godin defended brilliantly as he kept Ronaldo and company at bay throughout the match. Oscar Tabarez’s side will take on France in the quarterfinals.

Uruguay 2-1 Portugal!

FULL-TIME!

90+3 minute: Suarez finds space on the right flank and fires a cross in the middle but his teammate fails to make a contact. 

4 minutes of Stoppage time!

89 minute: Quaresma picks up a pass on the right-flank and makes a run towards the Uruguay box but gives away possession in the front. 

86 minute: Portugal are trying to create in the final third as they operate the ball near the Uruguay box. Fernandes attempts a shot from distance but clouds it away from the goal. 

85 minute: Substitution for Portugal, Fernandes in for Mario. 

7 minutes of Stoppage time!

82 minute: Uruguay have been brilliant as they defend in numbers and continue to cramp the Portugal strikes for space. Portugal need to push harder as they are running out of time. 

80 minute: Corner for Portugal. Substitution for Uruguay, Nandez is replaced by Sanchez. 

74 minute:  Substitution for Portugal, Andre Silva in for Goncalo Guedes. Subsitution for Uruguay, C. Stuani replaces Cavani. 

72 minute: Uruguay's Cavani does not look comfortable as he limps off the pitch with Ronaldo's help. 

70 minute: MISS! Portugal's Bernardo steals the ball from the goalkeeper but fires a volley past the crossbar. 

65 minute: Substitution for Portugal,  Quaresma is in for Adrien Silva. 

Uruguay 2-1 Portugal!

61 minute: GOAL!!! Cavani goes unmarked and curls the ball perfectly into the right corner. Uruguay take the lead. 

58 minute: Throw-in for Uruguay near the far post. What a match this is turning out to be. Both teams are levelled and will push harder in the final third. 

Uruguay 1-1 Portugal

55 minute: GOAL!!!  Pepe pounces to head his sixth international goal. Uruguay concede their first goal of the 2018 World Cup. 

52 minute: Portugal's Raphael Guerreiro attempts a shot from long-range but clouds the ball away from the goal. Portugal have hardly troubled goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, so far. 

49 minute: Both teams are trying to settle themselves in the middle after the break. As it stands, Uruguay will face pace France in quarterfinals.

45+2 minute: Uruguay's Cavani picks up a pass inside the box and attempts a volley but hits the side net. That was close. 

2 minutes of Stoppage time!

42 minute:  Free-kick to Uruguay as Nahitan Nandez goes down after a challenge. Uruguay have defended brilliantly to keep the scoreline intact. 

 

 

34 minute: Portugal are pressing hard to equalise but fail to hold the ball in the final third. Uruguay, on the other hand, are threatening on the counter. 

31 minute: Free-kick to Portugal right outside the box. This could be close. Ronaldo gears up to take it. He hits the ball directly into the Uruguay wall. 

25 minute: Free-kick to Portugal on the right flank. Joao Mario whips the ball in but fails to find a teammate in the box. 

22 minute: That was close. Suarez fires the ball past the Portugal wall but Rui Patricio leaps to his left to save the ball. SAVED!

21 minute:  Trouble for Portugal as they concede another free-kick at a dangerous position. 

20 minute: Free-kick to Uruguay Suarez goes down after a challenge from Raphael Guerreiro. 

16 minute: Portugal's Goncalo Guedes attempts a shot from distance but his shot gets blocked by Uruguay defenders. 

11 minute: Corner for Portugal. Jose Fonte fails to find a teammate with his header. 

Uruguay 1-0 Portugal!

7 minute: GOAL!! Suarez makes a brilliant cross from the left for Cavani to head the ball past the goalkeeper. 

6 minute: Ronaldo picks up a pass right outside the Uruguay box and fires the ball directly into the hands of the goalkeeper. That was close. 

4 minute: Corner for Uruguay. Both teams are looking to attack early in the match. 

2 minute: Free-kick to Portugal after Pepe goes down in a challenge from Cavani.

The South Europeans will meet Uruguay for the first time in a World Cup. Both Portugal and Uruguay have played twice, where Portugal beat the latter 3-0 at an International friendly in 
1966 and drew 1-1 in the 1972 Independence cup.  

Uruguay boasts a formidable defence lead by Diego Godín and Lucas Torreira, who cramped their opponents for space up-front in their group stage matches. Ronaldo, on the other hand, has scored 85 goals in 153 International appearances. Expect a cracker of a match at the Fisht Stadium, Sochi.
