Perth: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni looked short of ideas in the first ODI against Australia where his spinners failed to make an impact. (India vs Australia: Full Coverage, Fixtures)
Defending 309, Barinder Sran got India to a great start when he dismissed Aaron Finch and David Warner for paltry scores. But while the rookie pacer impressed from the word go, India's spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja failed to capitalise on the good start.
Both Ashwin and Jadeja, have been in sublime form in the last few months where they have made lives miserable for the best of batsmen on Asian tracks. But at WACA, the duo leaked 129 runs from 18 overs, with Ashwin picking two wickets.
Considering their performances and Ishant Sharma's finger injury, Dhoni might be contemplating to play Rishi Dhawan as the fourth pacer for the second ODI.
The skipper himself agreed that he had not imagined the spinners would be so ineffective in the opening encounter.
"I never thought it will be the spinners who will have a very bad day and the others will have to share that responsibility," he added.
"It's a tricky one. If you see the bowling department, the fast bowlers did a very good job; it was the spinners who could have bowled better if they could have just avoided the easy boundary deliveries."
The second ODI is scheduled to be played at the Brisbane Cricket Ground on January 15.
