250 runs will always be a headline for domestic batsmen, says Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi: Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has a word of advice for young batsmen wanting to get in the Indian side by saying not to be satisfied with mere 100s and to make it 200 or 250 to force national selectors to take notice.

Gavaskar said that since there are many league games happening at the same time, 250 runs will always be a headline.

"When you get 250, follow it up with a 200 then again a 150 maybe. Once you have got that 250, you guys are going to write big, so the headlines are there. Since there are six-seven league games happening at the same time, lots of hundreds happen, but this stands out,” said Gavaskar.

Gavaskar added that just a hundred or five-wicket performance will not force selectors to notice.

"Otherwise, a hundred or a five-wicket performance will only feature in regional papers. But for selectors to notice, you need a big double hundred. Doesn't matter which region you are from, 250 will always be a headline. Lots of batsmen score hundreds but if you want selectors to notice, it's got to be double hundreds, 250s so that the selectors sit up and take notice," he said.

On the aspect that the selectors did not select the likes of India Test regulars Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara for the Rest of India side in the Irani Cup, Gavaskar said that the selectors had their own reason.

"Ideally yes. But I think the selection committee had their own reasons for looking at other players. I think the thinking is that we have had a look at Pujara and Vijay and Rahul, we want to see somebody else,” said Gavaskar.

Rest of India team defeated Mumbai in the Irani Trophy.
