IPL 2021: What is the Bio-Bubble in T20 league

The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. IPL 2021 will get underway in Chennai on Friday (April 9) with the opening fixture between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore but all eight franchises have been in bio-bubbles for the last few weeks -- divided between Mumbai and Chennai initially. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are strict when it comes to complete adherence to guidelines and safety measures inside these bio-bubbles, which have now become integral part of international cricket as well. We try and explain what is a bio-bubble with these collection of pictures.

They are not allowed to meet their family or friends, apart from those already inside the bio-bubble. To enter a bio-bubble, a player needs to clear the RT-PCR test before leaving his home country. Upon arrival at the destination, he will be tested again for COVID-19 and has to confine in a room until the results are declared. (Photo: Mumbai Indians)

In other words, it is a safe and secure environment that can only be accessed by only approved set of people who have tested negative for COVID-19 to minimise the risk of transmission during the course of the event.  (Photo: Kolkata Knight Riders)
