IND vs SL 2nd ODI: Top 5 Mankad run-outs that erupted controversy after Rohit Sharma withdraws appeal to dismiss Dasun Shanaka

Mankading has become the most controversial mode of dismissals. Despite the MCC, the law makers in cricket, removing the stigma attached to the run out last year, many in the cricketing world feel it is an unethical way to dismiss a batter. Not to forget, MCC has clearly written in its rulebook that a bowler can dismiss the batter a non-striker's end (rules permitting) and the dismissal is not against the spirit of the game. Yet, the mankad controversy keeps on happening. The dismissal is called 'Mankading' because it was first done by Vinoo Mankad, wo ran out a batter for backing up too far at the non-striker's end. Since then the foreign media labels it as 'mankading', something which is wrong to do on the field of cricket. Here, we bring you top 5 controversies that erupted thanks to mankading dismissal. Read on.

The mankading dismissal was brought back to the conversation when R Ashwin ran out Jos Buttler at the non-striker's end for backing up too far in one of the IPL 2019 matches. Since then Ashwin has been a big advocator of the dismissal, arguing on why a batter should not leave the crease. Buttler has not liked the way he got dismissed and has said on record that he or his England team will never make such a dismissal as it is against the spirit of the game. (Image source: Twitter)

This was one of the most talked about mankading dismissals. In the third ODI, with only wicket remaining, Indian bowler Deepti Sharma mankaded Charlie Dean who was backing up too far at the non-strikers' end consistently. Looking at this, Deepti mankaded Dean and India clean sweeped England 3-0 in their own backyard. The English media as well as former cricketers lashed out at Deepti and Team India. Harmanpreet Kaur, however, backed her teammate and said what they did was within the rules. The run out had erupted a war of words on Twitter among the followers of the game. (Image source: Twitter)

Adam Zampa vs Tom Rogers

In the Big Bash League match between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, Stars' leg-spinner Adam Zampa tried to mankad Tom Rogers while bowling the fourth delivery of the final over of the the innings. But the third umpire overtuned the decision as Zampa had clearly completed the rotation of his arms and this is not allowed in the rule. Zampa's run out attempt and the umpire's decision had started off debate on mankading again, on its uses and the rules that are very hard to stick to. (Image source: Twitter)

Shami vs Shanaka

In the first ODI, Dasun Shanaka who was batting on 98, was mankaded by Mohammed Shami. But Indian captain Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal. Rohit later said that they did not feel it right way to dismiss a batter who was on 98 and needed to find another way to get the batter out. Rohit's withdrawing of appeal and his eventual comments did not go down well with those who believe mankading is a right way of dismissal. (Image source: Twitter)
