World is heading for 'chocolate deficit', says report

London: Demand for chocolate will be at an all time high as cocoa production has decreased over time due to poor farming technique, a report said.

The author of a report titled “Destruction by Chocolate” claims that the world is running out of chocolate.

The chocolate deficit will impact more on the developing countries as the people in those nations buy more of the sweet treat, MailOnline said citing the report.

Cocoa supply is slowing due to poor farming methods which will drive the planet towards a deficit where demand will outstrip supply, the report claimed.

Since the 1990s, over a billion people from China, Indonesia, India, Brazil and the former Soviet Union have entered the market for cocoa.

But despite increased demand, stockpiles of cocoa are falling.

Production of cocoa is under strain as farming methods have not changed for hundreds of years, the Mail quoted Doug Hawkins, from London-based research firm Hardman Agribusiness, as saying.
