Cuttack: Continuing its month-long offensive against anti-social elements, police arrested three gun runners from three different locations of Cuttack city.
Police claimed to have seized four pistols and ten rounds of ammunition from the three arrested yesterday. A motorcycle and three mobile phones were also seized.
The three arrested have confessed before the police that they were working for the dreaded mafia Dhalasamant brothers and were collecting extortion money from different contractors and businessmen in the city, a press note from city DCP office said.
The note said one Prakash Behera alias Babua of Sheikh Bazar, who had been dealing with illegal arms and ammunition since 2010, had gone to the house of Dhalasamant brothers in Sector 6 of CDA to deliver arms and ammunition and he was apprehended by Markatnagar police.
Police seized a 9 mm pistol and ten rounds of bullets from him and on subsequent interrogation, Babua disclosed before the police that he had sold one 7.65 pistol to one Debendra Behera alias Tutu of Sheikh Bazar and another 9 mm pistol to one Samir Kanta Sharma alias Nandu of Gandarpur.
Police raided the houses of Tutu and Nandu and seized the arms from them after taking them into custody.
Meanwhile, Twin City police commissioner Y B Khurania said police have traced huge immovable property worth crores of rupees in the names of Dhalasamants at prime locations.
Khurania claimed that police have detected a four acre land at Cuttack Sadar, 15 acres of land at Bidyadharpur and 4000 sq ft of plot at Bidanasi in Cuttack city in the names of the mafia brothers.
