New Delhi: Continuing their tirade against the Modi government, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with leaders of the Shiv Sena, National Conference and Aam Aadmi Party met President Pranab Mukherjee to protest against the problems caused to people over the government's move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.
Addressing the media outside Rashtrapati Bhavan, Banerjee took a dig at the Centre's alleged mismanagement over cash crunch saying, “Initially ATM meant "All time Money" now it is "Aayega tab milega".
While apprising the reporters about their meet with the President, the Trinamool Congress supremo said, “We have requested the President to speak to the government and bring back normalcy in the country.”
She hoped President Pranab, who served as the finance minister during UPA regime, will take appropriate step.
“Trinamool Congress will move adjournment motion in Lok Sabha against demonetisation,” the Bengal CM said.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was among leaders who took part in the march that started from the Parliament House premises.
The leaders presented a memorandum to President Mukherjee over their demands concerning the decision to demonetise 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.
About 40 MPs took part in the march.
Leaders of the other opposition parties including Congress, Left parties, SP and BSP did not took part in the protest march.
While the opposition parties participating in the march demanded complete reversal of demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, the Shiv Sena differed on the issue and insisted the government to extend the deadline of accepting the old currency.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on had on November 8 announced its decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, leading to huge queues outside banks and ATMs to exchange the banned notes, deposit them, or withdraw currency that is legal tender.
