Anupam Kher says only definition of nationalism should be ''Bharat mata ki jai''
Lyricist Javed Akhtar had on Tuesday lashed out at AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi over slogan "Bharat mata ki jai".
New Delhi: Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Wednesday said that the slogan `Bharat mata ki jai` should be the only definition of nationalism for Indians.
Backing noted lyricist Javed Akhtar`s passionate call for saying `Bharat mata ki jai`, the actor tweeted:
The only definition of NATIONALISM for Bharatwasis should be "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". Rest all are escape routes.:) — Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) March 16, 2016
The comment came days after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi said he will not chant "Bharat mata ki jai".
"I don't chant that slogan. What are you going to do, (Mohan) Bhagwat sahab," the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad had said, adding "I won't utter that (slogan) even if you put a knife to my throat".
On Tuesday, Akhtar slammed Owaisi in his Parliament speech and said: "The Constitution even does not ask him to wear sherwani and topi (cap). I don`t care to know whether saying `Bharat mata ki jai` is my duty or not, it is my right."
The lyricist proceeded to chant `Bharat mata ki jai` several times.
