RIP Amma: Here's why Chennai's Marina Beach has been chosen as cremation site for Jayalalithaa

J Jayalalithaa, who passed away at Chennai's Apollo Hospital at 11.30 PM on Monday after waging a grim battle for life since her hospitalisation on September 22, will be cremated near Marina Beach in Chennai.

Chennai: J Jayalalithaa, who passed away at Chennai's Apollo Hospital at 11.30 PM on Monday after waging a grim battle for life since her hospitalisation on September 22, will be cremated near Marina Beach in Chennai.

Marina Beach has been chosen at the site area for Amma's cremation as it has MGR memorial. It was built in memory of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran. MGR was the founder of AIDAMK party.

Preparations are in full swing at MGR Memorial at Marina beach for last rites ceremony 

The cremation will take place at 4:30 PM, according to AIADMK. 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party chief J Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5 at 11.30 PM in Apollo hospital, Chennai, where she was admitted since September 22. 

On Sunday, 'Amma' as she was fondly called, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away a day later, at the age of 68 years.

Late Monday night, after the announcement, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam was sworn in as the chief minister.
