BMC election 2017 results: As it happened

For the 25 zilla parishads, BJP led the tally, winning 397 of the 1,509 seats for which polls were held. It was followed by NCP 336, Congress 293 and Shiv Sena 259. MNS got one and others 147. Results of 76 seats still awaited.

PM Narendra Modi also congratulated CM Devendra Fadnavis and his team for the victory.

"Our party is number 1 in Mumbai," Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said while addressing a press conference after BMC election results were declared.

BJP's Atul Shah wins in ward no 220 of BMC after lottery in presence of Municipal Commissioner, taking his party's total tally to 82 now. 

BJP's Atul Shah and Surendra Bagalkar get equal votes again after re-counting. Decision will be taken by lottery.

In 2012,out of 227 seats in the BMC, the Shiv Sena had won 75 while BJP had bagged 31, the Congress 52 and the NCP 13. 

BJP leader Vinod Tawde says his party has emerged as the overall leader in elections to 10 municipal corporations and 25 zilla parishads.

"This result is a befitting reply to Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who had said the BJP did not have the 'aukat' (ability) to win even 40 seats in the BMC," Tawde says.

There are 227 seats in the BMC. The Shiv Sena had won 75 of the 227 seats last time, with the BJP winning 31, the Congress 52 and the NCP 13. 

Noteworthy, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is India’s richest civic body.

Retaining control of BMC is vital for Shiv Sena as the city has remained its prime political space ever since the party's formation in 1966. Shiv Sena has been in power in BMC for over two decades.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has 227 seats.

The stakes are high for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who led their respective parties from the front and were involved in a no-holds-barred campaign, relegating the Opposition Congress, the NCP and other players like the MNS and the AIMIM to the background.

BJP and its bickering ally in the state government Shiv Sena, who could not form an alliance for the civic poll in the megapolis or elsewhere this time, fought keenly, lashing out freely at each other during the bitter campaign.

Mumbai civic body BMC recorded a 55 per cent turn out on Tuesday.

The counting for BMC elections results will begin at 10 AM on Thursday.

All eyes are on the outcome of the fiercely-fought BMC elections. It's a prestige battle for BJP and Shiv Sena.
