Dhani Ram Shandil, a retired army colonel and the oldest candidate in the fray at 82, had maintained a lead over Rajesh Kashyap right from the start, and the final margin of victory was 3,858 votes.

Congress’ victory is an 'emotional moment': says Pratibha Singh

Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Pratibha Virbhadra Singh, on Thursday, said that the party is not worried about poaching. While speaking with ANI, the Congress leader reiterated, "It is a very emotional moment for me as I can see the same kind of support from people as it was for the late Virbhadra Singh."

"Chandigarh is an easily accessible meeting point for MLAs and we are not worried about poaching," she added.

According to Election Commission, BJP candidate D S Thakur defeated six-time Congress MLA Asha Kumari in Himachal Pradesh's Dalhousie assembly seat by a margin of 9,918 votes. Asha Kumari was being projected as the chief ministerial candidate in Himachal Pradesh.

Former Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Kuldeep Rathore won from Theog assembly seat in Shimla district on Thursday, defeating the BJP's Ajay Shyam by 5,269 votes, according to the Election Commission. The stakes were high for Rathore, who was contesting for the first time.
It was during his tenure as the state Congress chief that the party won by-elections to the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and three assembly seats last year. Sitting MLA and lone CPI(M) candidate Rakesh Singh and Independents Indu Verma and Vijaypal Khachi were also in the fray. (PTI)

Incumbent Congress MLA Bhawani Singh won Himachal Pradesh's Fatehpur seat by defeating his nearest rival forest minister Rakesh Pathania by a margin of 7,354 votes. The contest for Fatehpur was keenly watched as Pathania, who has won three times from Nurpur assembly seat, was shifted to the constituency. Singh got 32,452 votes while Pathania received 25,462 votes, according to Election Commission data.

Himachal Pradesh minister Suresh Bhardwaj lost from the Kasumpti seat on Thursday, defeated by sitting Congress MLA Anirudh Singh. The victory margin for Anirudh Singh was 8,655 votes. BJP's Bhardwaj was shifted to Kasumpti from Shimla (Urban) constituency. Bhardwaj represented the Shimla (Urban) constituency in the outgoing assembly. (PTI)

Himachal election result: Congress' sitting MLA from Kasumpti Anirudh Singh leading

Congress' incumbent MLA Anirudh Singh is leading over his nearest BJP rival Suresh Bhardwaj in the Kasumpti assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh, according to the Election Commission. The erstwhile member of the Koti royal family, Singh was ahead with a margin of 7,596 votes in the seat which has an urban-rural mix.

Independent candidate from Hamirpur, Ashish Sharma leading in the Assembly constituency, as per ECI. "I'm awaiting the final results, and will take any decision (on extending support to another party) after the results are out," he was quoted by ANI.

Himachal Poll result: Vote counting continues, EC says THIS

Counting of votes began at 8 am at 68 counting halls spread across 59 locations throughout the state with the taking up of postal ballots first.
After a gap of 30 minutes from the commencement of counting of postal ballot papers, the counting of votes for electronic voting machines (EVMs) will commence at 8.30 am. The EVM counting will continue irrespective of the stage of postal ballot counting, the Election Commission said.

Himachal Assembly results: Parties await their fate

Himachal Pradesh saw an intense campaign with BJP trying to return to power for a second consecutive term and Congress backing on its '10 guarantees' that the party listed out in its manifesto to take them home. The emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party as the third major political force in the state has intensified the electoral battle. Besides these three parties, parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Rashtriya Devbhumi Party (RDP) are also in the fray.
