New Delhi: Exit polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh may have predicted a win for Bhartiya Janata Party but Congress supporters remained confident of their triumph early Monday. Even before counting of votes in both states began, several of them were seen with banners congratulating party President Rahul Gandhi for winning both elections.

A large group of supporters assembled in front of Rahul Gandhi's residence here on a cold winter Monday morning. Some of them were seen conducting havan - praying for Congress' triumph in what has been a bitterly-fought state assembly elections. When campaigning began, Rahul was the Vice-President of the party. On Saturday, he officially took over as President from mother Sonia Gandhi. And through it all, he kept his guns trained straight at BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His supporters cheered his every move but their pre-emptive celebrations on Monday may have been a case of being just too enthusiastic. After all, early trends from counting showed BJP carving out a lead for itself.

Celebratory scenes outside Congress headquarters and Rahul's residence are hardly anything new. Even on Saturday, the firework-spectacle seen was what is usually observed after electoral triumphs. And while there were no fireworks early on counting day, prayers and congratulatory wishes were galore. Congress did manage to put up a stiff fight in Gujarat as counting got underway - even managing to lead BJP for a brief moment before giving way. Counting of votes is still underway in both states.
