New Delhi: The famous post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh had cut off his ear in a mental fit. The real reason behind this violent behaviour is still unknown and largely draws on many speculations related to the artist's personal life.

According to BBC.com, the woman to whom Vincent gave his cut off ear has finally been identified. Yes! The mystery has been solved by The Art Newspaper. The BBC report mentions that the lady has been identified as Gabrielle Berlatier, a farmer's daughter who worked as a maid in a brothel.

It is reported that while gifting her with this unusual present, the painter uttered these words, “keep this object carefully".

The journey of tracking this mystery woman started after author Bernadette Murphy mentioned her name in a new book titled Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story. The Art Newspaper followed up the story and searched for this woman, reported BBC.

The report mentions how Gabrielle's name was found in the records of the Institut Pasteur in Paris as she was once treated for rabies after being bitten by a dog. Now, it seems that Vincent severed his complete earlobe in an imbalanced mental state.

BBC quotes Martin Bailey, who wrote The Art Newspaper story, who said that discovering the name solved "one of the mysteries involving Van Gogh. It was a name I knew, so it wasn't an entire surprise and it was more of a confirmation. But now we know the person, we can possibly find out more in future about the incident, who she was and Van Gogh's links to her."
