BIZARRE! When groundsman and not cricketer was given man-of-the-match award

New Delhi: The cricket world witnessed a strange incident on December 12, 2000 when not one of the players but the groundsman was adjudged man-of-the-match.

Chris Scott and his staff were awarded for making sure that the rain-hit third Test between South Africa and New Zealand went ahead.

The intense downpour made sure there was no action on Days 1, 3 and 4.

The Kiwis scored 200 in its first innings, while the Proteas were batting on 261 for three when the match was called off 30 minutes before the scheduled close.

South Africa had won the first Test by five wickets and the second by seven wickets.

Despite the home side's series win, this Test will always be remembered for reasons other than cricket.
