Bangladesh vs England, 1st Test, Day 1: As it happened...

Chittagong: Bangladesh restricted England to 258-7 at stumps on the first day of the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong today. Debutante all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz was the hero of the day with a five-wicket haul. For England, Moeen Ali was the top scorer with 68.

The Bangla Tigers are looking to bounce back after losing the three-match ODI series 1-2 against England.

In the intervening period between Tea, England seemed to have countered Bangladeshi spin attack, but the wicket of Moeen Ali allowed the home side to take back the initiative.

Hasan continued to make his debut memorable as he scalped the big fish – Joe Root! Root was playing for the turn but it took a thin edge off his bat and was grabbed by Sabbir Rahman. The wicket also ended the 62-run stand for the fourth wicket. Ben Stokes is the new man in and England need this pair to stitch another partnership.

Hasan, the debutant picked his second wicket of the match when he trapped Ballance in front of the wicket. The field umpire wasn't convinced, after which Mushfiqur went for the review and it paid off. The skipper couldn't have asked for a better start from his bowlers. Joe Root is at the crease and the onus is once again on him to bail his team out of this precarious situation. Moeen Ali is another batsman at the crease. England desperately need a partnership here.

Bangladesh got two crucial breakthroughs as both openers – Ben Duckett and Alastair Cook – were dismissed in consecutive overs. Hasan, who was bowling with a disciplined line and length, was rewarded in his fifth over when he bowled Duckett. But the hosts got the big fish when Shakib Al Hasan bowled Cook in his first over of the innings. The left-hander was surprised by the sharp turn as he tried to play a sweep shot but was bowled. This is a superb start for Bangladesh.
