Aamir’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’: Concealment of ‘satya’?

Zeenews Bureau Mumbai: Ever since the second episode of Aamir Khan’s teleshow ‘Satyamev Jayate’ went on air, the excruciatingly painful truth about child abuse has been exorcised from the depths of ignominy. The episode and its contents might have been instrumental in jolting the consciousness of many people awake, the bone of contention lies somewhere else. Harish Iyer, the victim of child abuse who spoke out about his traumatic experiences on Sunday, is a well known gay rights activist. The man is the same whose life has been the inspiration behind two well-acclaimed movies, ‘Amen’ and ‘I Am – Abhimanyu’. However, not even for once did Aamir or Harish speak about the latter’s designation as an out-of-the-closet gay activist. Besides being quite vocal about his sexual orientation and work on public platforms like Facebook and Twitter, Harish is also working on a book about child sexual abuse now. Harish is a well known figure in the gay community and minces no words when it comes to homosexuality or gay rights. However, not even for once was his identity brought to the fore in the episode of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ while Harish himself has spoken elsewhere about his sexual orientation as perhaps being consequent of his abuse as a child. The question now remains is whether Aamir is playing it safe by not ruffling up the feathers of the Indian audience as far as that dark underbelly called moral and social ‘acceptance’ is concerned. The truth, as they say, does prevail. We hope it does so in this case too!
