Blast rocks New York underground subway station, 4 injured; 1 suspect arrested

The incident was frightening and disturbing. It was a low tech device. Situation was handled extraordinarily well. A sweep is being done. The service at the subway is being restored: Governor Cuomo on New York subway pipe bombing.

There are no additional instances for now, no additional activites, no threat against NY city at this point of time, but a fuller investigation willl be done, the mayor said.

The New York has been an international target because we love democracy. But this is New York, we don't live in fear, let's get back to work, Cuomo said.  

A sweep (search) has been done at the site and the station has been restored. The bus services are also being restored, the governor said at joint press conference.

A number of law enforcement agencies are on the job and they are doing an excellent job, the governor said at a joint press conference.

The New York authorities confirmed the subway blast was a terrorist attack.

Law enforcement official tells AP that man had an explosive device strapped on when it exploded in New York City subway, reports ANI.

NYPD's transit bureau chief tweeted that all subway services through Times Square have been restricted, and requested everyone to avoid the area.

White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted that US President Donald Trump has been briefed about the explosion.

New agency Reuters is reporting that police have confirmed they have taken one person in custody. But NYPD has not yet confirmed what type of device was used in the explosion.

Word is still awaited on whether this was a terrorist attack or the explosion was caused by some other factor.

It is yet unclear how many have been injured in the explosion.

The location is close to the iconic Times Square.

Blast took place near the busy Port Authority Bus Terminal.
