Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and ensure you have two 20cm round sandwich tins, greased and floured.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together 225g unsalted butter and 225g sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in four large eggs, one at a time, followed by 225g self-raising flour, gently folded in.
Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared tins and smooth the tops.
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in the tins for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cool, sandwich together with your chosen filling.
