Who is Om Birla?

Om Birla is an MP from Kota, Rajasthan. He retained the seat after defeating Congress’s Prahlad Gunjal by a margin of 41,000 votes

Years in tenure

Om Birla has been since 2014 and went on to retain his seat in both the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Speaker

He was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in 2019. In 2024, he became the first speaker to be re-elected to the lower house in 20 years

Early Days

He was born in Kota on November 23, 1962, and was involved in student politics while in college. He completed his M Com from Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer

Political Career

In 1991, he became the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of BJP. He then was also made the National Vice President in 1997

MLA

In 2003, he was elected as the MLA in the Rajasthan Assembly from the Kota South seat. He also worked as the Parliamentary secretary of the state government led by chief minister Vasundhara Raje
