"According to Ayurveda, the eyes are governed by Pitta dosha, which is linked to the fire element and is responsible for metabolic processes. To restore balance and enhance eye health, Ayurveda suggests adopting specific dietary and lifestyle practices," says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu. He lists the following 10 practices for healthy eyes.

1. Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration is vital for maintaining healthy eyes. Drinking plenty of water and incorporating hydrating foods such as juicy fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas can help keep the body well-hydrated, including the eyes.

2. Pick Pitta-Soothing Diet

To balance Pitta dosha and support eye health, focus on consuming cooling and nourishing foods. Examples include cucumbers, coconut water, leafy greens, and sweet fruits like grapes and melons.

3. Add Ghee To Diet

Ghee, or clarified butter, is considered beneficial for lubricating the eyes and improving vision. Incorporating a small amount of ghee into your daily diet through cooking or adding it to warm drinks can be advantageous. Opting for pure grass-fed cow ghee is recommended.

4. Take Herbal Supplements

Certain herbs and herbal supplements are known for their benefits in promoting eye health. Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is rich in antioxidants and helps rejuvenate the eyes. Bilberry is another herb known for supporting healthy blood flow to the eyes and improving vision.

5. Do Eye Exercises

Just like other parts of the body, the eyes benefit from regular exercise. Simple eye exercises such as blinking, palming, and eye rotations can help relax eye muscles, improve blood circulation, and reduce eye strain.

6. Maintain Good Sleep Cycle

Quality sleep is essential for allowing the eyes to rest and rejuvenate. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime to create a conducive sleeping environment.

7. Combat Pollution

Shielding the eyes from harsh environmental factors such as dust, smoke, and pollutants is crucial. Wearing sunglasses outdoors to block harmful UV rays and reduce glare, as well as using lubricating eye drops or Ayurvedic eye treatments, can help cleanse and soothe the eyes.

8. Practice Stress Management

Stress can adversely affect eye health by contributing to conditions like dry eyes and eye strain. Incorporating stress-reducing practices such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can promote relaxation and overall well-being.

9. Maintain Hygiene

Good eye hygiene is essential for preventing infections and maintaining healthy eyes. This includes washing hands frequently, avoiding unnecessary touching or rubbing of the eyes, and regularly cleaning eyeglasses or contact lenses.

10. Check With Experts

If experiencing persistent eye problems or changes in vision, it's essential to consult with an ophthalmologist or Ayurvedic practitioner for proper diagnosis and treatment. Ayurveda offers specific therapies such as Netra Tarpana (eye rejuvenation) and Netra Basti (eye cleansing therapy) to address various eye conditions.
