The term 'Gurpurab' combines 'Guru,' meaning 'teacher,' and 'Purab,' signifying 'Festival' or 'Celebration' in Punjabi.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib near Lahore, Pakistan. He was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.
He was a proponent of peace, dedicating his life to the promotion of equality and tolerance.
Numerous hymns written by Guru Nanak were compiled by Guru Arjan, into the sacred scripture of Sikhism, Adi Granth, when he travelled around India visiting holy places.
The festival is observed on the full moon day in the month of Kartik, which falls in October or November. This year, Gurunanak Jayanti will be celebrated on November 27.
