The song is from the 1951 classic Hindi film, 'Awaara'. The film's music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. The song was written in the Urdu language by lyricist Shailendra and sung by Mukesh. Apart from going on to become a cult song in India, 'awaara hoon' also struck a chord and became popular among audiences in China, Soviet Union and the Middle East, among other countries.

The song was rated the second-greatest Bollywood song of all time in a May 2013 BBC poll. Its popularity led to the creation of localised versions of the song in Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, China, and Romania, among other places.

The film too was a sensation abroad, apart from being considered a classic in India. It stars Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Raj Kapoor's father Prithviraj Kapoor, Leela Chitnis and KN Singh.

It was hugely popular in Soviet Union, China, Turkey, Afghanistan and Romania, among other countries. The film was also nominated for the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. It was the second highest-grossing 1951 film globally.

'Awaara' was included in the 20 new entries to all-time 100 greatest films by TIME magazine in 2012.
