Tamil Nadu State Election Commission moves Madras High Court to defer local body polls

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) on Monday moved to the Madras High Court to defer the local body polls.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had ordered the conduct of local body elections in the state by November 17, 2017. The First Division Bench consisting of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar had passed the order on September 4.

Earlier, the TNSEC challenged an order passed by Justice N. Kirubakaran to quash the September 26 notification for conducting local body elections on October 17 and 19 for noncompliance of Rule 24 of the Tamil Nadu Panchayat (Election) Rules of 1995 which contemplates the issuance of advance notifications.
