Puducherry govt urged to extend education aid to govt students alone

Puducherry: Puducherry BJP on Sunday urged the territorial government to ensure that financial assistance was extended to government school students alone to enable them to pursue higher education.

President of the local unit of BJP, V Saminathan in a release here said that students from private higher secondary schools formed a big chunk of candidates selected for the higher and professional courses through Centralised Admission committee as these students were getting education of high standard in private institutions.

Whereas students from government schools had to surmount several shortcomings and deficiencies in their schools and very few students could pursue professional course.

Shortage of teachers, lack of sufficient labs and other infrastructures were among the problems plaguing the students in government schools here.

There were instances of government schools coming out with very poor showing in public examinations, he said.

The benefits of financial assistance were extended to all children and majority of the beneficiaries were children from rich families and from private schools, he claimed.

The government should address the shortcomings in government schools and restrict financial assistance for professional and higher education to students from government schools, Saminathan said.
