TRICHY: A pregnant woman pillion rider died in Thiruverumbur in Trichy after a policeman allegedly kicked the two-wheeler which her husband was driving. The incident took place on Wednesday after a traffic inspector allegedly kicked the two-wheeler to stop the woman Usha's husband Raja for not wearing a helmet.

The traffic policeman reportedly asked the couple to stop but the Raja sped away. The inspector, who was allegedly drunk, chased the couple on a bike. After the police officer allegedly kicked the motorcycle from behind, Raja lost the balance of the vehicle and the couple fell on the road. The victim Usha reportedly fell from the bike and was run over by a van.

Usha and Raja were rushed to a government hospital in Thuvakudi where she was declared dead. While the police officer denied kicking the bike, eyewitnesses confirmed the incident. The issue was brought to the notice of the superintendent of police who ordered the arrest of the inspector.

After the incident, locals gathered at the spot in protest and blocked the highway for several hours. Some agitators even turned violent and started pelting stones at police vehicles near the spot. The police had to resort to lathicharge to clear the protesters.
