Kanchipuram: Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati was admitted to Chennai's Ramachandra hospital on Sunday.

He had collapsed at the math in the evening with shortness of breath. As per Zee Media sources, his blood sugar had dipped.

Kanchi Shankaracharya had visited Delhi in November 2017 and had not been in the best of health.

He is 69th pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. He was named by Chadrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal as his successor on March 22, 1954.

In August 2016 too, he was rushed to a hospital in Vijayawada, following a spurt in his blood pressure.

The seer, who was taken to hospital in an unconscious state, was put on ventilator by the doctors at that time. Later, his condition had become stable.

Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham was established by Sri Adi Sankara in the year 482 BC and has the distinction of an unbroken line of 70 acharyas (spiritual leaders).
