Rio Olympics Round-up: How India performed on Day 5 of biggest sporting extravaganza

New Delhi: India's hunt for first medal at Rio Olympics 2016 continues after a mixed-day on Day 5 of world's biggest sporting extravaganza.

Jitu Rai, one of India's best bet to win a medal, yet again faltered when it mattered, failing to qualify for finals of men's 50m pistol event, which many considered his pet event.

His Indian compatriot Prakash Nanjappa also failed to make an impression in the same event.

India's women hockey team suffered successive defeats, after suffering a humiliating 1-6 defeat to a rampant Australian outfit.

India's weightlifting campaign also came to end with Sathish Sivalingam failing to make the finals of men's 77kg event.

It's similar story in Judo too. India's lone Judoka Avtar Singh lost to Refugee Olympic Athletes' Popole Misenga, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the men's under-90 kg elimination round of 32.

But Laishram Bombayla and Deepika Kumari made into the pre-quarters of individual competition to keep India's medal chances alive in archery, a sport which has seen a rebirth in the country.

Another bright spot for India on Day 5 was boxer Manoj Kumar's qualification in men's light welter (64kg) pre-quarters. He defeated London bronze medallist Evaldas Petraukas of Lithiuna 2-1 in a close bout.

In tennis, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna's first round mixed doubles match against Australia pair of Sam Stusor and John Peers was postponed due to bad weather.
