New Delhi: Indian hockey legend Mohammed Shahid on Wednesday passed away at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.
The 56-year-old's medical condition had been worsening and he had gone into coma on Tuesday night.
Shahid was a member of India's 1980 Olympics team, which won the gold medal in Moscow.
Shahid was battling a liver and kidney ailment and had been provided with a medical grant of Rs 10 lakh from the Sports Ministry. His employers, Railways, had agreed to pay medical expenses incurred due to his treatment.
The hockey great was visited by several members of the fraternity in the last few weeks.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too took to social micro-blogging site Twitter to condole his death.
