PV Sindhu says she wants to clinch All England Championship as a mark of respect for coach Pullela Gopichand

New Delhi: Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu made history at Rio Olympics 2016, where she became the first Indian woman to clinch a silver medal at the biggest sporting extravaganza. It's not that she was an unheralded athlete, but that historic moment made her a household name post the Games.

While Sindhu was in sensational form at Rio, the credit was largely given to her coach Pullela Gopichand, who trained her for the biggest stage as a build up to the Olympics.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sindhu said that as a mark of respect for her hard working coach, she now aims at winning the prestigious All England Championship.

“I have developed the technique of learning while training with Gopi sir. He has been a great source of inspiration. As a mark of respect, I would like to win the All-England title like him,” said Sindhu.

Aware of the fact that expectations are now very high from her, the shuttler said she would try her best to change the colour of her medal to Gold at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

“Over the years, I have been training under Gopi sir. I want to become the first Indian woman to win the All England title. I believe I can do this and will also try to convert my white medal into yellow at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” she said.

Notably, Gopichand won Yonex All-England Badminton Championships in 2011 by defeating Chen Hong of China, the 12th seed, 15-12, 15-6.
