New Delhi: Former Brazil defender Roberto Carlos is often defined as the man who defied the laws of physics with his free-kicks.

The left-footer's thunderbolts are part of football folklore and most agree that the game will never see another one like the Brazilian.

However little-known Penang player Faiz Subri on Tuesday scored a goal that many believe was even better than Carlos's stunner against France in 1997.

Subri's swerving set-piece goal in a Malaysian league match not just won him a cash prize but also made him a sensation on the Internet.

His 25-metre strike has been dubbed the "knuckleball goal" on Twitter and YouTube.

Some social media users earmarked Faiz as a contender for the 2016 FIFA Puskas award, given to the scorer of the best goal of the year, but the 29-year-old is already being recognised for his remarkable effort.

The Penang government gave him a cheque for 10,000 ringgit ($2,400) for bringing fame and glory to the state and country. (With Agency inputs)
