Two deaths in a week: Football fan dies inside stadium during Northern Ireland-Ukraine Euro 2016 match

New Delhi: A Northern Ireland supporter has died at the Stade de Lyon during the team's historic 2-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2016 in France on Thursday.

Robert Rainey, known as Archie, reportedly collapsed due to heart attack in one of the stands at about 18:00 local time.

Medics tried to resuscitate the 62-year-old Belfast man inside the stadium but he was later pronounced dead.

Relatives said: "The family wish to confirm the sad news that our father Robert Rainey, known to everyone as Archie, has sadly passed away whilst in France supporting Northern Ireland at the Euros surrounded by all his friends and family, doing what he loved best.”

The death of Rainey came after another Northern Ireland supporter was involved in an accident on the French Riviera.

On Monday, Darren Rodgers, 24, from Ballymena, died after falling eight metres off a promenade in Nice.

Fans paid tribute to him by applauding in the 24th minute of the Ukraine match.

Gareth McAuley and Niall McGinn scored to help Northern Ireland register their first ever win in the Euro finals, and retain their hopes of qualifying for the knock-outs.

With a win and a defeat, Northern Ireland are third with three points in the Group C, behind World champions Germany and Poland — both have four points.
