Premier League: Liverpool defeated in historic comeback, Manchester United held with late penalty

New Delhi: Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester United were were given late blows in respective encounters with Bournemouth and Everton on Sunday.

While Juergen Klopp's Liverpool squandered a 2-goal cushion to lose the game 4-3, Jose Mourinho's Manchester United could only secure a 1-1 draw after giving the opposition a late penalty.

United dropped two points when former Toffees midfielder Marouane Fellaini conceded an 89th-minute penalty soon after he had come on as a substitute.

Third-placed Liverpool's defeat was their first in any competition since August and for most part of the game, they looked like to continue their incredible run after cruising into a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Sadio Mane and Divock Origi – the latter starting his first league game of the season – were the scorers for the Reds in first half.

For Bournemouth, Scotland Under-21 international Ryan Fraser came on 10 minutes after halftime

and immediately won a penalty that Callum Wilson converted.

Emre Can restored Liverpool`s two-goal lead with a stunning effort in the space of three minutes. Fraser drove in Wilson and Steve Cook brought the hosts level with two quick goals in 76th and 78th minute.

Bournemouth later secured one of the best wins in their history – their first against Liverpool – as goalkeeper Loris Karius fumbled a shot from long range, enabling defender Nathan Ake poke the ball in.

For Manchester United, Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck with just 3 minutes to go in second half to hand the visitors a hard-fought lead at Goodison Park.

Leighton Baines, however, converted an 89th minute penalty to keep the Red Devils stuck at 6th position in the league standings.

United manager Jose Mourinho tried to dwell on the positives after he had sent on Fellaini against eighth-placed Everton.

The Belgian's clumsy tackle on Idrissa Gueye was responsible for Baines' success from he spot against an otherwise defiant David De Gea.

Continuing his run of goals, Ibrahimovic looked a constant threat and finished off a clever lob via the bar and post as goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg rushed out of the penalty area in panic.

United are now nine points behind 4th placed Manchester City and it looks like the race for top 4 will be even harder for the league's most successful club this season.
