New Delhi: Putting all speculations about his Real Madrid move, David de Gea signed a new contract at Manchester United, which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2019.

United announced the signing of the new contract on the club's official Twitter account:

The wantaway Spaniard goal-keepe almost joined Madrid last week, but the transfer deal collapsed to everyone's surprise last week, with both the clubs blaming each other for sending the paperwork after the permitted deadline.

And now, the 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the English Premier League club with an option to extend it for a further year.

United's official website carried a statement from the goalie, who said: “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.”

A delighted manager Louis van Gaal hailed De Gea as one of the best goal-keepers.

“I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons. He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him,” the Dutchman was quoted.

De Gea arrived in Old Trafford in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and has since established himself as one of the top players of the club, winning a Premier League title and two Community Shield trophies. And he has been featured in Premier League PFA Team of the Year twice in 2012–13 and 2014–15.

He has been Manchester United Players' Player of the Year in 2013–14 and 2014–15.
