New Delhi: Underlining the importance of the 5th AFC medical conference that commenced here on Monday, Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said it is aimed at development of medicine and science in the sport.

The acclaimed conference will provide cutting edge, evidence based scientific information in the field of sports and medicine courtesy a plethora of experts from numerous fields. Over 600 delegates are scheduled to attend the three-day programme in the Capital.

With All India Football Federation President Praful Patel, who expressed his delight at India's hosting of the elite gathering, and AFC Medical Committee Chairman Dato' Dr Gurcharan Singh also in attendance, Shaikh Salman reiterated the AFC's recognition of the importance of science and medicine in the development of the game and the care of the players.

"The aim of the 5th AFC Medical Conference is to explore the latest issues and updates in sports medicine to ensure that the AFC and football in Asia are at the forefront of innovation and excellence," Shaikh Salman said.

"The development in football, as well as the philosophy behind the game's tactical and technical approach has evolved considerably in recent years.

"As you will recognise the demands of high level competition has had an impact on the physical and mental condition of players - both on and off the pitch.

"It is therefore vital for the well-being of the players that we continue our investment in scientific research in the sports science, technology and medicine for the protection players' health as well as enhancement of their performance.

"Today, the AFC are glad to provide a crucial platform that should ensure football in Asia maintains its position and reputation for being at the cutting edge of sports medicine and science," the AFC President concluded.
